NHL Players Survey: McDavid, Vasilevskiy, Crosby Dominate

In the NHL Players Association’s annual survey released Wednesday, players continue to regard Edmonton’s Connor McDavid as the premier skater, Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy as the top goaltender, and Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby as the most well-rounded player in the league.

McDavid, Vasilevskiy, Crosby, and Colorado defenseman Cale Makar emerged as leading choices among the 639 respondents in the seventh edition of the survey. Montreal and Edmonton were lauded for having the best ice in the league, while Vegas and Carolina were deemed the toughest arenas to compete in.

As a three-time MVP and current Hart Trophy holder, McDavid has consistently claimed the title of best skater or forward since 2018-19. Vasilevskiy, a two-time Cup winner, has maintained his status as the go-to goalie to win a crucial game since 2020.

Among Vasilevskiy’s Lightning teammates, Nikita Kucherov was named the best playmaker, and Victor Hedman was singled out as the most challenging defenseman to face. In women’s hockey, Montreal’s Marie-Philip Poulin was selected as the top player to watch in the inaugural season of the Professional Women’s Hockey League, followed closely by American Hilary Knight.

In a nod to international expansion, Italy emerged as the preferred global destination to host NHL games, coinciding with the agreement to send NHL players to Milan for the 2026 Olympics. On a lighter note, Boston’s David Pastrnak edged out Toronto’s Auston Matthews for the title of best style.
